Joice ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application ("Joice" or the "App").

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Account Information

When you create an account, we collect:

  • Name (first name)
  • Email address
  • Authentication credentials (managed via our authentication provider)

1.2 Profile Information

During onboarding, you may optionally provide:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Occupation
  • Personal wellness goals (e.g., stress management, self-reflection)

1.3 Voice and Conversation Data

When you use Joice for voice journaling:

  • Voice recordings are captured by your device's microphone and streamed in real time to our AI processing partner (OpenAI) for conversation. Voice audio is not permanently stored by Joice or OpenAI after processing.
  • Conversation transcripts are generated from your voice sessions and stored in our database so you can review your journal entries.
  • AI-generated content including journal summaries, themes, and insights are derived from your transcripts by artificial intelligence and stored alongside your entries.

1.4 Usage Data

We collect analytics data to improve the app experience, including:

  • Session frequency and duration
  • Feature usage patterns
  • App performance metrics
  • Device type and operating system version

This data is collected via Mixpanel, a third-party analytics service.

1.5 Scheduling and Notification Data

If you set up journaling reminders, your preferred schedule (days and times) is stored locally on your device and on our servers.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide and maintain the Joice voice journaling service
  • Process your voice in real time for AI-powered conversation
  • Generate and store journal transcripts, summaries, and themes
  • Personalize your experience based on your goals and preferences
  • Send you journaling reminders and notifications (with your permission)
  • Generate weekly reflection digests
  • Improve and optimize the app through analytics
  • Communicate with you about the service

3. AI Processing and Third-Party Services

3.1 OpenAI

Your voice is streamed to OpenAI's Realtime API for AI-powered conversation during journaling sessions. OpenAI processes the audio to generate real-time responses. Per OpenAI's API data usage policy, data sent via the API is not used to train OpenAI's models. Voice audio is not permanently retained after the session ends.

3.2 Supabase

We use Supabase as our backend infrastructure provider. Your account information, transcripts, themes, and other app data are stored in Supabase's encrypted databases.

3.3 Mixpanel

We use Mixpanel for anonymized product analytics. Mixpanel collects usage patterns and app interaction data to help us improve the experience. This data does not include your journal content or voice recordings.

3.4 AIProxy

We use AIProxy to securely relay API requests to OpenAI, providing an additional layer of API key protection.

4. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored in encrypted databases. We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including:

  • Encryption in transit (TLS/SSL)
  • Encrypted database storage
  • Row-level security policies ensuring users can only access their own data
  • Secure API key management

5. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We share your information only with the third-party service providers listed in Section 3, and only as necessary to provide the Joice service. We may also disclose your information if required by law or to protect our rights.

6. Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. Voice audio is not permanently stored — only the resulting transcripts are retained. You may delete your data at any time (see Section 8).

7. Children's Privacy

Joice is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected data from a child under 13, please contact us immediately and we will delete it.

9. Disclaimer

Joice is a journaling tool and is not a medical device, therapy service, or substitute for professional mental health care. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988) or your local emergency services.

10. Changes to This Policy
